Daves Last 30th Birthday Present

Monday, 18 April 2005

On Saturday 16th of April I finally got to use my last birthday present from Narelle. A Driving Experience at the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground; a converted air strip where they test and instruct drivers around a small (2.2 mile) course. The photos can be found here.

This Photo is of Mike getting into the Ferrari. Mike was part of Team 3 and we promised that we would mention him and get a photo of him on the web site. [Ed. Yet to show on this newer web site]

Mike & the Ferrari

The day consisted of four cars and three laps of each car, the cars were (in order):

1. Porsche 996
2. Lotus Elise (latest model)
3. Ferrari 355
4. Subaru WRX

Each drive was with an instructor that showed you where to break, turn in and the general approach to the course given the car that you were driving. The instructors were of different levels, some were race drivers that race in the Formula Renault, others did it for fun, one guy just owns a Ferrari 360 and rents it out on a daily basis to weddings and joy rides. And that is it, this is how he makes his living!

The best car of the day would be a fairly even split between the Ferrari and the Lotus. In terms of Bang for your Buck the Lotus wins hands down. When I was driving the Lotus I caught the Ferrari through the corners but the amazing power of the Ferrari was evident on the straights where it easily pulled away. The Ferrari was an amazing drive and it handles so well and if I had the money I would buy one of these for sure.

The Porsche was also a nice drive, fast and very easy to throw around the corners, it is a bit hard to really judge as it was the first car that I drove around the track.

The worst was the Subaru WRX, mainly due to the instructor that was with me but also becuase it was not as rigid as the others and I could not get the handling right. It was a fast car, there is no doubt about it, but it lacks the fun that the other cars had.

It was a great day, I would like to thank Narelle for organising it, and I would love to do it again.

Cheers

Dave.
